City Lights (1931) w/David of Twenty Questions Tuesday

This week on Alcohollywood, we strap on our bowler hats and grab our wobbly bamboo canes as we tramp it up with David Rheinstrom of Twenty Questions Tuesday with David & David and Our Fair City by watching the Charlie Chaplin silent classic City Lights! In this delightful classic, our beloved Tramp (Chaplin) finds himself falling in with a comely blind flower girl and an eccentric millionaire, all while navigating the harsh world of the big city. Ambitious, timelessly hilarious, and heart-wrenchingly sweet, it’s commonly considered one of the best films of all time – now we’re here to help you drink to it. Listen and check out our drinking rules and custom cocktail below!

THIS EPISODE’S DRINK: The Tramp Champ

city lights cocktailA variant of the classic Charlie Chaplin cocktail, we keep the apricot brandy and liven it up with some fruity flavors and floral notes (get it? ‘cause Flower Girl?) to deliver a nice, strong punch like the kind the Tramp dishes out in the film’s iconic boxing scene.

3 part apricot brandy
2 parts red apple juice
splash, port wine
splash, rose water
dash, Bitterman’s Boston Bittahs

Combine in a brandy snifter; drink merrily until you befriend a benevolent, clumsy hobo.

DRINKING RULES FOR CITY LIGHTS:

  1. Butt stuff (e.g. whenever someone touches, manipulates, or does something to a butt)
  2. Every time you see an intertitle (sip lightly for these)
  3. Any time you hear a sound effect (e.g. kazoo mouth sounds, gunshots, bells, slide whistles)

FINISH YOUR DRINK WHEN:

The Flower Girl says, “Yes, I can see now,” in one of the most charming, heartfelt endings in film history.

Join us next week as we explore a decidedly less classy film – the love-it-or-hate-it genre mishmash Detention!
