Zardoz (1974) w/Keith Phipps of The Next Picture Show

Zardoz

This week, Keith Phipps of Uproxx and The Next Picture Show comes back to the show to help us make sense of the 1970s John Boorman/Sean Connery mindscrew Zardoz! Set in the year 2293, Zardoz tells the tale of Zed (Connery, wearing a red diaper and thigh-high leather boots, and nothing else) a brutish Exterminator who finds himself in an isolated community of decadent immortals who can’t die, and suddenly want his seed to make babies. The whole affair is a series of big, bold choices, many of which don’t work, but that’s part of the charm of this bizarre little filmic artifact. Even so,  it’s still fun to break it all down for you, along with our custom cocktail and drinking rules!

THIS EPISODE’S DRINK: The Gin is Good, The Pinot is Bad

Zardoz Cocktail

We decided to give you a gin/white wine martini since the title pun was too good to pass up. The crispness of the cucumber, mint and grapefruit make this a nice, light late-summer cocktail!

2 parts gin
2 parts grapefruit juice
1 part pinot gris
3-4 slices, cucumber
dash, mint bitters

Mix it just like a martini – muddle cucumber, add gin, grapefruit juice, bitters and pinot in a shaker with ice and stir (or shake, for Sean!). Strain into martini glass and garnish with lime peel.

DRINKING RULES FOR ZARDOZ:

  1. Whenever Sean Connery fiddles with/pokes things
  2. Every time you see gratuitous nudity
  3. Any time you hear bells or chimes

FINISH YOUR DRINK WHEN:

Zed says, “The voice of the turtle is heard in the land.”

Join us next week as we revisit the adventures of the Caped Crusader with Batman: Mask of the Phantasm!
