John Wick (2014) w/Down in Front

John Wick

This week, we go dog-avenging with Mike and Jessica of Down in Front as we check out the 2014 Keanu Reeves shoot-em-up John Wick! A straightforward but oh-so-stylish take on the action revenge thriller, the film follows Keanu’s titular former hitman as he takes revenge on the mob family that unknowingly killed his dog and took his car. It’s a ridiculous premise, but the pitch-perfect action staging and stylish direction make it a tremendously enjoyable bit of pulp, and gives Keanu a much-needed punch in the arm (or stab in the kidney). Check out our thoughts along with our custom cocktail and drinking rules!

THIS EPISODE’S DRINK: Daisy

ep248-drink

Our John Wick cocktail was inspired by John’s love of bourbon, the Russian roots of his mob enemies, and the cutest dog you ever did see on a movie screen. Mixing all that together with some cranberry and Sprite, it’s a drink as bright as the film’s neon color scheme and as tasty as the violence John Wick doles out.

2 parts Kentucky bourbon
2 parts lemon-infused vodka
3 parts cranberry juice
1 part lemon-lime soda
dash, rhubarb bitters

Combine in a rocks class with ice, top with soda and bitters. Garnish with Milk-Bone.

DRINKING GAME FOR JOHN WICK:

  1. Whenever a new character recognizes John Wick and/or is chummy with him
  2. Anytime John Wick headshots someone (PLEASE DRINK RESPONSIBLY IT’S REALLY TOO MANY)
  3. Every time you see neon-colored words in the subtitles

FINISH YOUR DRINK WHEN:

Iosef gurgles “It was just a FUCK’N…” before Wick enacts his revenge.

Join us next week as we get musical with the Who rock opera Tommy!
