VIDEO GAME MOVIE MONTH: Silent Hill (2006)

For the month of May, we’re kicking off Video Game Movie Month, where every week we take on a new film adaptation of a video game!

This week, we’ve got a rogue’s gallery of guests (from recurring guest Julia to playwright Dusty Wilson, to Grant of Chip and Ironicus) to talk about the 2006 horror game adaptation Silent Hill! When Rose (Radha Mitchell) steals her adopted daughter Sharon (Jodelle Ferland) away to the abandoned town of Silent Hill to try to solve the mystery of her nightmares, they both end up in a hellish Lovecraftian hellscape full of psychological rape monsters, crazy cultists, and more peeling paint than a small-town playground. Does this horror flick live up to the atmosphere of the games, or is it a case study in how poorly video game mechanics and structure translate to the screen? Find out, along with our custom cocktail and drinking rules!

THIS EPISODE’S DRINK: The Rusty Pyramid

silent hill cocktailThis play on the Rusty Nail gives us a suitably nightmarish accompaniment to this atmospheric horror film. We replaced the Drambuie with Irish Mist, added some smoky and sweet flavors with the hickory and apple, and rounded it out with citrus and cinnamon flavors to make a palatable drink not even Pyramid Head could refuse – provided he could drink through that giant helmet of his.

2 parts scotch
2 parts Irish Mist
3 parts apple juice
1 drop liquid hickory
Splash, lemon
Splash, orange
Pinch, ground cinnamon

Fill a glass with ice; add ingredients and stir.

DRINKING RULES FOR SILENT HILL:

  1. Every time Rose shouts or says “Sharon!”
  2. Whenever Rose picks up or drops an important item for her inventory
  3. Any time you see Christian imagery or symbolism (e.g. crosses, Scripture)

FINISH YOUR DRINK WHEN:

Cybil (Laurie Holden) shouts, “SHE’S JUST A CHILD! WHAT THE FUCK IS WRONG WITH YOU PEOPLE?!”

Join us next week as we take an unconventional tack for Video Game Movie Month by covering Cloak and Dagger, a video game movie about a video game that doesn’t exist!
