In preparation for Thanksgiving, the folks at Alcohollywood decided to take a trip down memory lane to visit the 1987 Steve Martin/John Candy road movie Planes, Trains & Automobiles! Pull up a chair, pour yourself a drink, and take pleasure in the comfort of the holidays. While you’re at it, give thanks that your trip home wasn’t as eventful as the one Steve Martin endures.

THIS EPISODE’S DRINK: John Candied Yams

planes trains and automobiles cocktail2 parts sweet potato-infused vodka

1 part Goldschlager cinnamon schnapps

2 parts A&W cream soda

white of 1 egg

graham crackers, pecans, nutmeg

Line the rim of a martini glass with crushed graham crackers and crushed pecans. Pour the egg white, sweet potato-infused vodka, Goldschlager, and cream soda into a cocktail shaker with ice. Shake vigorously. Strain into martini glass. Sprinkle nutmeg on top.

DRINKING RULES FOR PLANES TRAINS AND AUTOMOBILES:

  1. Every time you see or hear the name of a city or location (e.g. Chicago, New York, Wichita)
  2. Every mention of a mode of transportation (e.g. bus, plane, train)
  3. Each time Del Griffith (John Candy) follows a sentence with nervous, jovial laughter

FINISH YOUR DRINK WHEN:

Neal Page (Steve Martin) gives his minute-long, obscenity-laden monologue to a helpless rental car agent after a rough day. (HINT: it’s the one with all the ‘fuck’s in it.)

See you next week for the official Thanksgiving episode of Alcohollywood, when we tackle the hour-long horror travesty ThanksKilling!
