The Blues Brothers (1980) w/Pat McDonald of Chicago Film Tour

blues brothers

This week, Jared and Clint embark on a mission from God with special guest Pat “Uber-Critic” McDonald of HollywoodChicago.com and Chicago Film Tour (and the podcast Lou Dickman Weekly) as we check out the classic 1980 comedy The Blues Brothers! Following Jake and Elwood Blues as they ‘get the band back together’ to save the orphanage where they grew up, John Landis’ cult hit is a celebration of 1980s Chicago and the urban blues scene while being a great absurdist comedy in its own right. Check out our thoughts along with our custom cocktail and drinking game!

THIS EPISODE’S DRINK: The Blue Whip

blues brothers cocktail

John Candy’s improvised order of the Orange Whip at the film’s climax led us to create this blue variant – we ditched the orange juice and upped the booze, and added some blue curacao, orange and mango-flavored spirits, and vanilla ice cream. Slap on your Ray-Bans, throw on your black fedora, and enjoy!

1 part orange-flavored vodka
2 parts milk
1 part blue curacao
1 part mango-infused rum
4 parts vanilla ice cream

Combine in blender and pour into Collins glass. Top with whipped cream and a maraschino cherry.

DRINKING RULES FOR THE BLUES BROTHERS:

  1. Whenever you see a new awesome cameo
  2. Property damage (of which there is a lot)
  3. Any time a new song or musical sequence starts

FINISH YOUR DRINK WHEN:

Elwood runs down their situation at the climax: “It’s 106 miles to Chicago, we got a full tank of gas, half a pack of cigarettes, it’s dark… and we’re wearing sunglasses.” Jake: “HIT IT.”

Join us next week as we worship at the altar of Shark Week with the Dolph Lundgren action film Shark Lake!
