The Rock (1996) w/Nerd Outcast Podcast

rock

While we continue to get our full-length radio drama production of Indiana Jones and the Monkey King up (listen to the trailer here!) for the 200th episode, we continue on to 201 with Michael Bay’s 1996 explosion-fest The Rock! Featuring Michael Bay’s signature excess and kineticism before many people got sick of it, The Rock stars Sean Connery and Nic Cage as an unlikely duo who need to stop a crazed former general (Ed Harris) from gassing San Francisco after holing himself up in the prison island of Alcatraz. Chris Bashen of Nerd Outcast Podcast joins us to ask the hard questions, like: Isn’t Ed Harris actually right? Why does this movie get a pass from people who hate Michael Bay? What happened to Park Ranger Bob? Take a listen and check out our custom cocktail and drinking game!

THIS EPISODE’S DRINK: Rock and a Hard Cage

For this Bay-tastic cocktail, we decided to both mirror the color and consistency of the VX gas McGuffin of The Rock and play off Cage’s bizarre ‘wine-into-champagne’ monologue. The result is a fruity, sweet, bombastic libation that teeters on the edge of sensory overload – just like a certain filmmaker we all know.

1 part champagne
1 part gin
2 parts limeade
1 part watermelon juice
fresh mint leaves
½ tsp honey

Muddle 2-3 mint leaves at the bottom of a glass; add ice and pour/stir remaining ingredients ON THE ROCKS GET IT. (Top with the champagne.)

RULES:

  1. Whenever the characters state the obvious
  2. Any time Nic Cage almost-swears (gosh, golly, etc.)
  3. Every time Michael Bay lingers on extreme close-ups of characters’ faces

FINISH YOUR DRINK WHEN:

Mason goads Goodspeed into action by saying, “Losers whine about their best. Winners go home and fuck the prom queen.”

Join us next week as we check out the John Cleese-Kevin Kline-Jamie Lee Curtis cult comedy A Fish Called Wanda!
